A supermarket with tons of fruit and vegetables about to expire doesn't really have a logistics problem. It has a perception problem. Customers associate those products with lower quality, so they don't buy them, even though they're perfectly fine. That's exactly the kind of problem Behavioral Design solves.
Behavioral science explains why people don't always decide rationally. We use mental shortcuts, we're influenced by how information is presented, and we look for solutions that are good enough, not perfect. Behavioral Design takes that knowledge and turns it into something applicable. If behavioral science is the diagnosis of how we decide, Behavioral Design is the treatment: a design process that creates or modifies products, services, and communications to achieve a specific, measurable behavior change.
There are several frameworks that structure this process, like the COM-B model (Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation as conditions for Behavior) or the EAST framework from the UK's behavioral team (Easy, Attractive, Social, Timely). At Heurística Lab we follow our own four-stage process, compatible with and built on these frameworks.
Let's go back to the supermarket with a waste problem. The financial losses are real, and so is the environmental impact, so the goal is to effectively reduce that waste. The case is illustrative, but it's inspired by a real precedent. In Colombia, the spread of lionfish (an invasive species that threatened the biodiversity of Caribbean reefs) was even declared a national security issue, until the Ogilvy agency launched the campaign "The lionfish invasion, terribly delicious." Instead of continuing to describe it as a threat, the campaign reframed it as a nutritious, tasty fish, spread recipes, and helped control its overpopulation by increasing consumption. Here's what solving a similar problem with Behavioral Design would look like.
Before proposing solutions, you need to pin down two things: which specific behavior you want to change, and which behavioral barrier is holding it back. "Reduce fruit and vegetable waste" is too general to design anything from. "Increase purchases of products near their expiration date" is already a concrete, measurable behavior.
The barrier, in this case, is also behavioral, not logistical. Customers associate near-expiration products with lower quality or freshness, so they avoid choosing them even though they're perfectly fine.
Before inventing a solution from scratch, we review what interventions or studies exist for similar problems. The lionfish case is exactly that kind of input. It shows that reframing a product perceived as undesirable, instead of hiding or discarding it, can change the purchase decision without cutting the price to a loss. The scientific literature on framing is the other main input at this stage.
With the barrier identified and the evidence reviewed, we design concrete solutions. For our supermarket, here are two examples of what applying this approach would look like.
Reframing the product (framing). Instead of labeling the product "about to expire," which triggers customer distrust, it's reframed as "Today's pick" or "Fresh selection for today." It's the same product, but how it's presented completely changes how it's perceived.
Satisfaction guarantee (loss aversion). If a customer isn't happy with the fruit or vegetables they bought, they can get an immediate refund or replacement. This reduces the perceived risk of "losing" their money, which is exactly what made them hesitate in the first place.
Neither solution gets rolled out to every store yet. They're first tested in a small group of branches, comparing sales of near-expiration products against stores that didn't get the change. Only if the result holds up with real data does it get implemented at scale. It's the same discipline Uber Labs applied when redesigning Uber Express Pool. Showing the user the vehicle's real-time location, the search progress, and the estimated arrival time reduced post-request cancellations by 11%, a result that was only confirmed by measuring it before rolling the change out to the whole platform.
Behavioral Design complements product design and user research with a specific method. Every solution responds to an identified behavioral barrier, and each one is validated with evidence before it's scaled. That last step, measuring instead of assuming, is what separates a good idea from a solution that actually changes behavior in your business.
